Borders, bleed, and cut contour decisions — Q&A + FAQ

Understand the physical finished edge, printed outlines, and cutline compromises.

Why does a sticker sometimes need a white outline even if my artwork has none?

A modest white outline can separate dark artwork from the cut edge and give an intricate silhouette a practical contour. It is also part of the final design, not the transparent backing. If you prefer another color or no visible white, request that look before approving.

Can the border follow every hair, feather, or jagged line in my drawing?

The printed image can retain fine detail while the outside cut follows a smoother offset. Extremely deep notches and narrow points may be unreliable at small sizes. We can preserve the character of the art without forcing the cutter to reproduce every tiny edge.

What does a 0.06-inch cutline offset mean?

It describes a small spacing between an artwork silhouette and the proposed outer cut, often used as an initial setup for a printed sticker. It is not automatically the correct visible border width for every design. Follow the current template and your approved proof.

Why does a narrow black border look uneven after a sticker is cut?

Tiny changes in registration become more noticeable when the visible border is extremely thin. A slightly wider consistent border, bleed beyond the cut, or a simpler contour can make the finished edge look more intentional. Review this at real size, not only zoomed in.

Can I request a black border around a full-color sticker?

Yes. Specify whether the black region should be printed inside the final cutline and how wide you want it to appear. A dark printed border and the outer cut contour are separate layers, so both need approval.

What is the difference between an inner hole and an outer cutline?

The outer cutline defines the finished perimeter. An inner hole would require an additional interior cut and may not be supported or practical at the chosen size. For printed stickers, a white or clear-looking area inside the artwork does not automatically become a physical hole.

Can a sticker cut around the open center of a letter O?

For a printed sticker, the interior of an O is normally printed as part of the design and not cut away. Traditional cut vinyl lettering is different: the center can be weeded out so the surface shows through. Choose the right construction for that effect.

Why are the corners of my cut-to-shape sticker slightly rounded?

A tiny radius can avoid fragile tips, reduce lifting, and improve cutting around tight turns. The printed art itself can still have a sharp-looking point inside the contour. If the exact outside silhouette matters, request a Manual Proof and review the proposed cutline.

Can I remove a background without changing the sticker shape?

Yes. Removing a printed background and changing the outside cut are separate choices. You can keep an uncomplicated contour while making the artwork's surrounding area white or clear where supported. Confirm both appearance and cut shape before approval.

How can I check that a face or logo will not be clipped by the cutter?

Keep vital elements well inside the finished cut, include appropriate safe area and bleed, and view the proof at the actual ordered size. Move a face, slogan, or QR code inward if it sits near a deep cutline notch or edge.

How can I lay out a label whose size is constrained by both a recess and a nearby fastener?

Measure the usable flat area inside the recess, then measure how much space must remain clear around the fastener, washer, hinge or other hardware. Build the design to fit the smaller practical area, with a little clearance so the label edge is not trapped under moving or tightened parts. Sketch the recess and hardware positions with measurements, including any rounded corners, and send a photo with a ruler for context. Keep important text away from the cut edge and preserve the artwork's proportions rather than stretching it to fit. Our team can review the requested cut shape and final size, but do not assume every tiny notch or narrow bridge will cut reliably without a production review.
