Meet the artist behind the atmosphere

Small details.
Whole new worlds.

Rachel is a Los Angeles-based background painter and designer whose work spans animation and print. She creates environments, props and illustrations that help a story feel like somewhere you could actually go.

Her public portfolio brings together painted backgrounds, design work and gouache studies. Away from the drawing board, she describes a love of cats, indie games and wonderfully dorky characters.

A little curiosity goes a long way. Follow the light, notice the shapes and spend a minute with the places Rachel builds.

Selected from the public portfolio

Somewhere you
want to stay awhile.

Light and color do more than fill a scene. They give it a time of day, a mood and the feeling that something might happen next.

From structure to atmosphere

Look behind the scene.

A strong setting starts before the final color pass. Compare these public portfolio examples to see how structure, shapes and values become the foundation for a painted world.

A different kind of looking

Outside, with paint.

Rachel’s portfolio also includes plein-air gouache. These studies trade imagined settings for observed light, trees and architecture, keeping the brushwork visible.
