Specialty effects and holographic design — Q&A + FAQ

Design for specialty stock effects without sacrificing readable artwork.

Why should holographic stickers have bold lettering?

The changing reflections add visual activity behind and around the print. Bold type and strong shapes remain easier to recognize as the sticker tilts, while very thin lettering can disappear into the effect. Test how your design looks under more than one light source.

Can a holographic background make a QR code difficult to scan?

Yes. Reflective and color-shifting patterns can reduce the consistent contrast a phone camera needs. Reserve a solid, quiet area for the code, test a real printed sample, and avoid putting the code directly over the busiest part of the finish.

Why does oil slick vinyl look different in my proof than in person?

A static digital proof cannot reproduce angle-dependent color shifts or specular reflections. It mainly communicates artwork placement and cut shape. Use a physical material sample to judge the way oil slick changes when you tilt the sticker.

Should I add a printed border to oil slick stickers?

A clear, intentional border or exposed material region can help display the color-shifting effect and support a clean contour. Tell us whether the border should be printed or should show the specialty stock. Review the actual proposed edge before approval.

Can a black silhouette stand out on glitter chrome stock?

Often. A solid dark shape against a light-catching background creates a straightforward contrast. Tiny highlights or thin dark scratches can become harder to read, so simplify intricate art if the glitter effect is already carrying visual texture.

Will reflective vinyl look bright if nobody shines a light at it?

Reflective stock responds to incoming light; it does not illuminate itself. Its daytime appearance and response to a flashlight or headlights can differ. Do not treat decorative reflective graphics as certified traffic or emergency signage.

Can I print a dark blue color over reflective material?

A dark printed color may reduce the reflective look compared with exposed stock. If the exact shade matters, compare a printed sample with the available reflective base colors. Printing over reflective stock is not the same as choosing a factory-colored reflective film.

Do glow-in-the-dark designs need uncovered material to glow well?

Ink coverage can change how much light reaches and leaves a glow base. Bold designs with deliberately exposed glow areas may show the effect more clearly than solid, heavily covered graphics. Check the current material and a physical sample for expectations.

Does a holographic sticker always have to be glossy?

Many specialty effects rely on light reflection, but the compatible finish depends on the selected construction. Do not assume every matte, satin, or holographic pairing is offered. Use the material and laminate selectors to see current combinations.

Why does a subtle pastel gradient disappear against an oil-slick background?

Pastel tones have relatively little contrast, and a shifting holographic background can compete with them as lighting changes. Test bolder lettering, a darker keyline, or selective white support where appropriate. A screen preview cannot reproduce the exact movement and reflection of the physical material.

What should I mark on a clear sticker design when some tiny interior spaces must remain clear?

Mark three things separately: the outer sticker cutline, the artwork that should receive printed white ink, and the tiny interior spaces that must remain transparent. A clean vector file with separate named layers or clearly labeled annotations is ideal. Our clear stickers automatically include a white underbase, but we can selectively control the areas that receive it. Small interior openings may be difficult to isolate precisely, especially when artwork is soft-edged or low resolution. Send the original file and a visual reference, then ask our team to review whether those openings can stay clear at the final printed size. Don't assume an empty-looking area on your screen will automatically be interpreted as transparent white-ink artwork.
